A SIM card is a "subscriber identity module” — a plastic chip used in smartphones globally. SIM cards hold a unique ID number, phone number and other data that links your phone to a local wireless network and lets you make calls and send texts.

How SIM Cards Work

When you insert a SIM into your phone, there’s some cool tech working behind the scenes.

Unique ID

SIM cards hold unique information known as an IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) and an ICCID (Integrated Circuit Card Identifier), which are used to identify and verify your access to a wireless network. The IMSI is stored inside the SIM’s chip and provides increased security. The ICCID lets wireless network operators (like Boost Infinite) know which network to connect your SIM and phone to.

Types of SIM Cards

As the technology powering our phones has evolved, so have SIM cards. The size of SIM cards has changed a lot since they were introduced in 1991. Here’s a quick overview of the various types of SIM cards:

The Pros of SIM Cards

When traveling abroad, getting a local SIM card from the country you’re visiting makes connectivity as easy as swapping out your SIM. Also, your SIM card can be easily removed from a broken phone and inserted into a different device. Or, if your phone dies, your SIM card can be switched into a friend’s phone so you can still receive important calls and messages, even on a different phone.
